What happens when you combine Hip Hop Educator and financial planner?

You find a new path towards financial liberation

Hi! We are Pam and Dyalekt, and we’ve been doing this a while

After YEARS of studying personal finance, Hip Hop pedagogy, racial economic justice, and interpersonal neurobiology (the neuroscience of how we are hurt and how we heal in relationships), here’s what we know is true:

❤️‍🩹 Money is emotional - Every decision you make around money starts in your nervous system. How we spend our money represents our values, feelings, and state of mind.

📉 The game is rigged - If most of us are struggling financially, if most of us are having mental health issues, it’s not you, it’s the system. We can only fight it if we acknowledge it’s there.

💅🏽 Wants are needs too - Wants fulfill our emotional needs and when you give yourself permission to want things and get them, your willpower gets replenished and you can feel like yourself.

🌈 You are not bad at money - There is no such thing as being “good” or “bad” at money. You make decisions based on what will make you feel safe in the moment and that is okay. When you can find safety in other ways, your habits will change.

Why artists and creatives

Artists and money have a complicated relationship. You’re often caught between “if you make money from your art, you’re a sellout” and “if you don’t make a living off your art, are you really an artist?”

Very few professions have such contradictory measures for success, so money conversations can be emotionally charged and difficult to have ❤️‍🩹 We're here to be a partner and guide as you take this next step in your financial journey and artistic career.

Through a mix of interpersonal neurobiology concepts (the neuroscience of how are hurt and how we heal in relationships), racial wealth divide context, and financial expertise, we will honor your nervous system while we create a financial plan that aligns with your values, vision, and legacy.

We are committed to:

✨ Collectivism over individualism

✨ Expressing, not performing

✨ Being present and making space for ourselves and each other

✨ Deliberate inefficiency

✨ Transforming our relationship with money

It’s not money at the center, it’s people at the center.

A little more about us:

Pamela Capalad is a Certified Financial Planner™ and Accredited Financial Counselor™ and has been in the financial services industry since 2008. Her work integrates interpersonal neurobiology concepts and racial wealth equity context to provide financial guidance that makes people feel safe and whole. She founded and ran an award winning financial planning firm, Brunch & Budget, for 10 years.

Dyalekt has been an MC, theaterer, and educator (mostly all at once) for over 20 years and has been in financial education since 2014. He is the Director of Pedagogy at Pockets Change where we use hip hop to change the way we talk about money. He brings hip hop to places that don't know they need it but desperately do.

Together we founded financial liberation platforms Pockets Change, See Change, and Get Shameless. We regularly teach workshops, make art, and speak on how art, culture, and media are used to perpetuate racial wealth inequality and how artists have the power to change the narrative.

In other words, our mission is to help you - our fellow creatives, artists, makers, space holders - get shameless about money ☀️

We're excited you're here! Let's have some fun 🦋
